As adults in a child’s life, we have the unique chance to open doors that can change their future. By offering them glimpses into new experiences, we expand their horizons and inspire bigger dreams. We can also guide them through these opportunities, which might otherwise be out of reach. At our Homework Club, we create these chances for learners in Shakas Head by providing a structured environment focused on academic and personal growth.
Our Story
The Homework Club began in early 2020, just before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Initially started by one of our facilitators as a support group for young girls and boys playing soccer on a local field, it quickly evolved into a space offering not just homework assistance but also emotional support. Today, under the leadership of Georgia van Wyk and a dedicated team of volunteers, the Homework Club has grown into a holistic development space. We continue to provide homework support but have expanded our programme to include literacy and math support, as well as creative expression activities. These after-school engagements help our learners grow in various areas, nurturing both their academic and personal development.
One of our learners, Nkosinathi, has been part of the Homework Club for several years. His journey with us is a testament to the impact our programme can have. “Nathi has a higher self-esteem and more confidence now, and he is always encouraged to complete his homework,” says Nomthandazo his grandmother. His story reflects the positive changes we aim to nurture in all our learners—confidence, academic commitment, and personal growth.
Our Vision
The Homework Club currently serves learners from Grade 1 to Grade 8, providing a healthy environment where children can grow into their best selves. We intentionally incorporate Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) elements to support their emotional intelligence and overall well-being. Our dream is to deepen this support by diversifying the activities we offer and introducing new extracurricular skills that these learners might not have access to in their schools or communities. By connecting them with inspiring role models, we aim to help them build confidence in their personal identity and academic abilities.
Join Us
We currently work with over 30 children, each representing different age groups and interests. We would love to collaborate with individuals who are passionate about making a difference in these young lives. If you have a skill or talent you’d like to share, we invite you to apply for our volunteer opportunity. This is a commitment that promises to have a lasting impact, opening doors and windows to a future filled with hope and possibilities.
