Building A Culture Of Play, One Brick At A Time.

At the LINC Foundation, we know that play isn’t just fun—it’s a powerful way to learn! Our Play to Learn programme is all about creating inclusive, engaging, and hands-on learning experiences that spark curiosity, build problem-solving skills, and encourage creativity and collaboration. As part of this, we’ve introduced the Six Bricks programme, developed by Care for Education in partnership with the LEGO Foundation.

Six Bricks is a playful, hands-on approach that gets learners actively exploring concepts, making lessons more interactive and exciting. Educators in our schools have already commented on the positive impact integrating LEGO bricks has had on their classrooms. Nolwazi Nkabini, a Grade 1 educator at Qhubakahle Primary School, shared, “It has changed the way I teach by making all my lessons fun and exciting. Learners learn through play, so they become very excited when I start my lesson with LEGO bricks.” Philisiwe Maphumulo at Amabutho Primary School added, “They can work individually, in pairs, and in groups, so I can say the bricks encourage teamwork. They also help one another.”

Through our Play to Learn programme, we’re also supporting the great work being done by the Department of Basic Education, which has begun introducing Six Bricks in foundation phase classrooms. Our role is to provide extra training and support to educators in the schools we work with, helping them make play-based learning a natural part of their teaching. Alongside our Playground Initiative—which improves outdoor play and learning spaces—we’re making learning more dynamic, engaging, and accessible for all children.

Bringing play into everyday learning isn’t just about making lessons more fun—it’s also helping to tackle some of the developmental challenges educators have identified. As Grade R educator Thembani Xulu put it, “I realise that children can direct their own learning, promoting a playful, hands-on learning environment where they actively engage with concepts through building and manipulation.” This hands-on approach is key to nurturing a love for learning in young minds.

We’re excited to see the positive changes already happening in our classrooms. With every brick, we’re helping to build a strong foundation for lifelong learning—one playful moment at a time!
